Yeon Kendo Club was established in 2024 with the goal of taking the best of Korean Kendo traditions within Vancouver’s Korean community and the broader Canadian Kendo culture. We aim to contribute to the growth and development of Kendo in British Columbia.

Our dojo strives to preserve the roots of Korean Kendo while also embracing the openness and systematic training methods emphasized in Canadian Kendo, aiming to cultivate a more balanced and inclusive Kendo culture within the community.

The philosophy of Yeon Kendo Club is embodied in our name itself, particularly in the character ‘鍊 (Yeon),’ which represents continuous training, discipline, and refinement.

We believe that the repetitive and sustained process of training, though often challenging and demanding, is the most effective path to strengthening both mind and body. This spirit of persistent practice is what leads to genuine growth in Kendo and represents the core value that Yeon Kendo Club holds most dearly.

“Baeknyeon ji geum, cheongyun ji no” (百鍊之金, 千鈞之弩)

Just as one should refine oneself like metal forged and tempered a hundred times,

so too should one act—or draw one’s sword—with the decisive force of pulling a bow that bears the weight of a thousand measures.

연검당은 2024년에 설립된 도장으로, 밴쿠버 한인 검도와 캐나다 검도의 장점을 적절히 조화시켜 BC주 검도계의 발전과 활성화에 기여하고자 하는 목표를 가지고 있습니다.

지역 사회 속에서 한인 검도의 뿌리를 지키는 동시에, 캐나다 검도가 추구하는 열린 문화와 체계적인 수련 방식을 함께 접목하여, 보다 균형 잡힌 검도 문화를 만들어 가는 것을 지향합니다.

연검당의 이념은 도장 이름에서도 드러나듯, ‘연(鍊)’이라는 글자에 담긴 의미처럼 검도를 대하는 기본자세에서부터 끊임없는 수련과 자기단련의 가치를 중요하게 생각합니다.

반복적이고 지속적인 수련 과정은 때때로 고되고 힘들 수 있지만, 바로 그 과정을 통해 자신의 마음과 몸을 단련할 수 있다고 믿고 있습니다. 이러한 꾸준한 수련의 정신이야말로 검도가 추구하는 진정한 성장의 길이며, 연검당이 가장 소중하게 여기는 핵심 가치입니다.

백련지금, 천균지노 (百鍊之金, 千鈞之弩)

자신을 연마함에 있어 백번 단련한 쇠처럼 하다. 일을 실행함에, 또는 칼이나가는데 있어 천근 무게의 활을 당기 듯이 하라.
